Last Maryland 'Dream Act' Rally Before Election Set Saturday

Media blitz and 1,000-person march mark the beginning of the homestretch in the ballot battle over in-state tuition for undocumented students.

With Election Day a month away, supporters of the Maryland “Dream Act” have hit the airwaves and are putting on their last and biggest public display ahead of the Nov. 6 vote.

Maryland’s DREAMers—students, immigrant advocates, clergy and elected officials—are planning to march Saturday afternoon from Casa de Maryland’s multicultural center in Langley Park to the University of Maryland-College Park in a show of solidarity and to push Dream Act supporters to register to vote. Organizers are expecting a thousand participants.

Signed into law in May 2011, the Dream Act would allow undocumented students to qualify for in-state tuition in the state’s university system if they meet a set of requirements, including having graduated from a Maryland high school and that their parents pay state taxes.

A Republican-led petition drive easily amassed enough signatures to block the Dream Act from taking effect last summer, and after a pair of court battles this year, it landed on the Nov. 6 ballot, where it will appear as Question 4.

The Dream Act campaign has ramped steadily upward since emerging this spring. It has mobilized Maryland’s Latino youth, forged an alliance with the campaign to win Maryland’s vote on same-sex marriage, and consistently found favor in statewide polls.

Educating Maryland Kids—a coalition of educators, labor unions and immigrant advocates behind the push for the Dream Act—spent $54,000 for a radio ad that aired this week on WLIF and WPOC in Baltimore. The 90-second spot is the first in a series of radio and TV ads that will “blanket the airwaves” in the run-up to Election Day, according to a statement.

And organizers expect Saturday's rally—their final one before Election Day—to top their Baltimore march in July and Silver Spring march in August.

"Growing up in our beautiful state with its wonderful people I have come to call myself a true Marylander,” Claudia Quiñones, a student leader from Casa, said in a statement. "I want to have the opportunity to give back to this state that I have called home."

Why should we give these illegal aliens aliens anything? They have NO RIGHT to be in this country. We have enough American out of work to teach illegal aliens and take more jobs from us. I'm not a republican, but I will be voting for one in this election, and pray to God he will get our immigration laws ENFORCED! Who do this arrogant aliens think they are to enter this country ILLEGALLY, throw their fist in the air and demand we give them the DREAM Act and then amnesty? Yes, who do they think they are? Perhaps this story is a good example of how the illegal aliens are destroying this country.

You're right Delaware Bob. Don't pay attention to the local trolls. They have no facts on their sides yet continue to slam anyone who wants the laws followed.

The immigration policy of the US is broken. I needs to be overhauled, and it has been in need of repair for a long time. This has created issues living people in an illegal status. I am in favor of observing the rule of law. However, it has been a convenient policy to accept cheap labor from illegal aliens for many decades. The illegal aliens have not destroyed this country... they have performed the jobs that no one was willing to take. The children born in the US of those illegal aliens are just as Americans as anyone else. Therefore, the children are entitled to rights and obligations of every citizen born in the USA. Providing those children in state tuition is not given them anything that they do not have to pay for, it is only allowing to make it more affordable. Like every immigrant family that came before them, their children will have to work hard to escalate the next rung on the ladder.

Marylander;

The Maryland Dream Act is for young illegal immigrants, not citizens.

Prisons are for citizens who commit illegal acts. The Dream Act is a pathway to free education at your expense by people who are criminals but because they are not citizens are adored by the liberals.

how can people here illegally pay taxes without a valid social security number? It they are paying taxes, doesn't that mean they are using a stolen number?

Barbie, I was curious about this, too, so I looked it up. People can pay taxes through an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), which is issued regardless of immigration status.

It's better for them not not to use the Social Security number. Here's how they get the ITIN and then use it to steal billions in taxpayer refunds they are not entitled to and it's going on all around the country:
http://www.infowars.com/millions-of-illegal-immigrants-are-using-a-massive-scam-to-get-bigger-tax-refunds-than-you-are/
Did you know that illegal immigrants all over the United States are using a massive scam to receive tax refunds from the federal government that are often in excess of $10,000? It is estimated that 2 million illegal immigrants are filing fraudulent tax returns each year and that they are pulling in more than 4 billion dollars in tax refunds every year that they are not entitled to. They are doing this by abusing the additional child tax credit and the IRS knows all about it and yet they refuse to do anything to stop it. Illegal immigrants are filing tax returns that sometimes claim 10 or 12 nieces and nephews as dependents, and most of the time those nieces and nephews do not even live in the United States. So while you and I are being taxed into oblivion, many illegal immigrants are often pulling in tax refunds that are well into five figures. At a time when the federal government is absolutely drowning in debt, this is the type of fraud that desperately needs to be cracked down on, and yet the IRS refuses to take action.

There's millions of sources for it if you really want the facts:
https://www.numbersusa.com/content/news/july-3-2012/whistleblower-says-irs-managers-ignored-illegal-alien-itin-fraud.html
In WTHR’s latest report on Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) abuse and fraud, the Indianapolis NBC affiliate discussed revelations brought forward by an IRS whistleblower - "We were being told by upper management to ignore fraud, to assign ITIN numbers and...pay out refunds to people who are lying…It's a license to steal when you allow that."

Howard Antelis, a tax examiner at the IRS's ITIN processing center in Texas, contacted WTHR after seeing its series on ITIN fraud. He and other tax examiners said that IRS managers, for years, instructed them to "look the other way" while processing ITIN applications that appear to be fraudulent – even if they contain clear signs of criminal activity.

One time, Howard decided to investigate ITIN applications for dozens of children attending the same school in South Carolina. (Adult tax filers can request an ITIN for a child in order to get child tax credits and a larger tax refund.) He discovered the school didn't exist, but his bosses ordered him to approve the scam applications anyway.

Howard said, "We're tax examiners but the truth is we're not supposed to look into anything…It's like an assembly line…Get it out of here and don't worry about the fraud.

The legislature in Maryland wants us all to flaunt the federal laws and become part of the lawbreaker class by encouraging illegal aliens by giving them a free education.

In face you haven't heard if you vote for this your income taxes will soon have to be raised along with your property taxes. In addition to that Owe Malley wants a flush tax which will cost $600 per household.

Thank God I can get out of here next spring.

I have always thought cub reporter Sebastian Montes was an undercover plant by Casa of Maryland. This article is so over the top that it eliminates all doubt! Montes once again has Zero balance in his artcle nor does he link the the Help Save Maryland.org radio ad Against in-state tuition for illegal aliens! Thumbs down on the Patch!

The press appears to believe that if they tell enough people the issue is "ahead in the polls" they can get more people to vote for it. I predict it will go down by at least 7%.

History shows that one party states do not do particularly well, and Maryland is proof of that. Privatizing utilities, poloticising the WSSC board, prepayiny pepco for work that may or may not happen.... I normally vote democrat, but think it may be time to get some real opposition by voting republican. Hopefully there are many people out there who vote to make our beautiful state a true demoracy.

If democracy didn't get us here, I might agree with you. But in a two party state, when one party screws the people over enough, they vote that party out. As for the state not doing particularly well, show me a state that is doing well in this economic climate.

North Dakota. Yeah, right! Just wait a couple of years, after everyone realizes that's a shell game, and see how it's doing then. Hopefully the workers out there realize that their windfall is going to be short-lived. I feel bad for the rubes they are gulling into investing in oil rigs up there.

I hadn't made up my mind until learning that illegal immigrants and gay marriage are bedfellows.
