Update: Contrary to Twitter, MCPS Is Not Banning Leggings

Online rumor made "#MCPS" a local trending topic Wednesday night.

Update, 12:02 p.m.: While there is no district-wide ban on leggings and yoga pants in Montgomery County Public Schools, Rockville High School did add a similar provision to its code before this school year, its principal said.

Debra Munk said RHS administrators noticed a lot of girls wearing the garments last winter and amended the school's handbook to require that anyone wearing leggings or yoga pants also wear something that covers her midsection.

Original post, 8 a.m.: For an hour or so on Wednesday night, "#MCPS" was a regionally trending topic on Twitter, and not because of the superintendent's budget presentation.

Instead, teens around the county took to tweeting to complain that Montgomery County Public Schools was banning students from wearing leggings and yoga pants to class.

The thing is, MCPS isn't doing that.

Schools spokesman Dana Tofig said in an e-mail to Patch that there is no MCPS policy banning leggings or yoga pants, and that he hasn't heard of any single school banning them either.

That didn't stop the #MCPS trending topic, though, and many students weighed in with harsh words for the school district and odes to the virtues of yoga pants.

For instance, as @paulajolivieri tweeted, "True that Montgomery County Public Schools is banning leggings + yoga pants? I'd rather die than wear real pants everyday! #mcps #thehorror."

Others were more defiant, like @KaySee15, who wrote "#MCPS doesn't control our clothing choice. We wear what we want, when we want. If you don't like it, girls will come to school pantless."

And @Marvinxgaga even offered some advice for district administrators: "If MCPS is gonna start banning things, they should ban people who don't cleanse themselves daily."

Rockville High School has in fact banned yoga pants and leggings. This is in their dress code, under things banned, from the 2011-2012 Parent and Student Handbook:
"Extremely revealing clothes including extremely low cut necklines, midriff tops, short shorts/skirts, exposed undergarments, one shoulder garments, halter tops, strapless tops, spaghetti straps, tube tops, low cut waist-line pants/shorts/skirts, yoga pants, leggings and stockings worn as pants, or other garments deemed distracting and/or inappropriate for the school environment." but this was released at the beginning of the year, so why it is an issue now I do not know. The original of the handbook can be found here, the dress code appears on page 24: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/rockvillehs/pdf/ParentHandbook2011.pdf
